Research Shows More Than the Vast Majority of Alternative Healing Titles on Online Marketplace Probably Produced by AI

A recent investigation has revealed that AI-generated material has penetrated the herbalism book section on the online marketplace, featuring products advertising gingko "memory-boost tinctures", fennel "tummy-soothing syrups", and immune-support citrus supplements.

Disturbing Statistics from Content Analysis Investigation

Based on analyzing over five hundred books released in the platform's herbal remedies category from the first three quarters of 2024, researchers determined that the vast majority were likely created by artificial intelligence.

"This is a troubling exposure of the extensive reach of unmarked, unconfirmed, unsupervised, potentially automated text that has completely invaded Amazon's ecosystem," commented the investigation's primary author.

Professional Apprehensions About Artificially Produced Medical Information

"There is a substantial volume of herbal research out there currently that's entirely unreliable," commented a medical herbalist. "AI won't know the process of filtering through the worthless material, all the rubbish, that's completely irrelevant. It would lead people astray."

Illustration: Top-Selling Publication Under Suspicion

An example of the ostensibly AI-generated titles, Natural Healing Handbook, currently maintains the top-selling position in the marketplace's skincare, aroma therapies and alternative therapies sections. Its introduction promotes the book as "a resource for individual assurance", advising consumers to "focus internally" for solutions.

Doubtful Writer Credentials

The author is named as an unverified writer, whose Amazon page presents this individual as a "thirty-five year old remedy specialist from the coastal town of Byron Bay" and creator of the company My Harmony Herb. Nevertheless, none of this individual, the brand, or associated entities demonstrate any digital footprint outside of the Amazon page for the book.

Recognizing AI-Generated Text

Analysis discovered multiple indicators that suggest potential artificially produced alternative healing content, including:

  • Frequent employment of the nature icon
  • Plant-related author names such as Flower names, Nature words, and Clove
  • References to controversial natural practitioners who have endorsed unverified remedies for serious conditions

Larger Trend of Unchecked Automated Material

These titles represent a larger trend of unchecked automated text being sold on the platform. In recent times, wild mushroom collectors were advised to avoid wild plant identification publications available on the marketplace, ostensibly created by chatbots and including questionable advice on how to discern lethal mushrooms from edible types.

Demands for Oversight and Identification

Business leaders have urged the marketplace to commence identifying artificially created text. "Every publication that is entirely AI-created must be labeled as such and automated garbage needs to be removed as an urgent priority."

Reacting, the platform commented: "We maintain publication standards regulating which publications can be displayed for purchase, and we have proactive and reactive methods that aid in discovering material that violates our guidelines, regardless of whether automatically produced or different. We commit substantial manpower and funds to make certain our standards are followed, and remove publications that fail to comply to those standards."
