Pizza Market Saturation? Domino's Pizza Chief Executive Steps Down Following Pivot Towards Fried Chicken.
A head of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who indicated the UK might have hit peak pizza while broadening the chain into chicken products has been replaced after disagreements with its directors.
Leadership Transition
Rennie is leaving after a brief tenure in charge, and will be succeeded on an interim basis by the company's operations head, Frampton, while Domino's seeks a long-term chief.
Rennie, who was with the company for more than two decades, had sought to redirect Britain's biggest pizza delivery company towards poultry-based products, commenting in a recent interview there was not “massive growth” left in the UK's pizza market. He said poultry was the most rapidly expanding protein in the globe.
Governance Friction
Reports indicate that there was disagreement between the CEO and the board over his approach and direction, although the company's release said he was departing “through mutual consent”.
New Brand Introduction
In the autumn, the chain unveiled its chicken-focused product line – which Rennie described as a “major strategic shift” for the company – and is piloting it in select stores in the north-west of England and the province.
While the business is still planning to expand it across its nearly 1,400 branches in 2026 as intended, it considers fried chicken as an addition to its main pizza offerings.
Board Statement
Bull, the company chair, said: “The board believes that there are a number of opportunities to boost expansion and profitability in Domino's core business. We are prioritizing identifying the ideal CEO to lead the disciplined execution of that growth strategy.”
Industry Difficulties
Earlier this month, Domino's, which has a substantial customer base in the British Isles, said sales dipped by 1.5 percent in the latest quarter. In August, it cautioned that the food delivery sector had “grown more challenging” as it attributed economic uncertainty in the lead-up to the government announcement and increasing labor expenses for disappointing revenue and a 15 percent decline in half-year profits.
Rival chains are also experiencing difficulties. Pizza Hut revealed the closure of multiple locations a month ago, after the firm behind its outlets entered insolvency.
Wellness Initiatives
Adapting to consumer trends towards better nutrition, the company has launched light products, such as its thin-crust line of pizzas below 400 kcal as well as meat-free and gluten-free pizzas. A family-sized pepperoni has 2,311 kcals. A family cheese pizza has over 2,100, while a small has under 1,000 calories.
Interim Leadership
Frampton has been with the company since the recent past, and had a background at the betting firm William Hill. It is understood that she is not seeking to assume the top job long-term.
She said: “The company has a multiple current growth and performance initiatives that we will be concentrating on implementing at speed.”
Frampton noted these comprised additional efforts on the company's procurement system and new item creation, and its loyalty scheme.
The pizza chain is also in need of a full-time finance director until March 16, when a new appointee comes aboard from the beverage producer C&C Group. In the meantime, Snow acts as temporary CFO.
