Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader Larry Summers is departing from the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a series of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became public.
The economist commented in an announcement that he was "grateful for the chance to have participated, enthusiastic about the prospects of the organization, and eagerly await tracking their progress".
The former Harvard president, who previously led the prestigious university, stated on recently that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his connections with Epstein.
Email Communications
The freshly disclosed communications showed that the economist communicated with Epstein until the eve of the financier's 2019 detention for alleged sex trafficking of young people.
In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company said it accepted his determination to step down.
"We acknowledge his many contributions and the insight he offered to the Board," the company commented.
Congressional Action
This announcement follows after the entire Congress of the legislative branch decided on Tuesday to approve a legislation that would mandate the federal prosecutors to make public its records on the case.
The legislation will subsequently move to the office of President Trump for endorsement. The President has indicated he intends to endorse the legislation, after reversing his stance on the issue following pushback from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A group of Epstein-related emails made public by the House Oversight Committee recently referenced several high-profile figures in the financier's former circle, without implying any illegal behavior by those individuals.
The messages indicated that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with Epstein often seeking to connect the academic to influential global figures.
Personal Response
After the messages were shared with the wider community, he stated he assumed "complete accountability for my misguided decision to continue corresponding with the financier".
He further stated that he desired "to reestablish confidence and mend bonds with the people closest to me".

The economist served in leadership roles under Democratic administrations; functioning as economic leader under President Clinton, and as leader of the economic advisory body under the former leader.
He presided over the university from 2001 to 2006 and is still a professor there. When stating his withdrawal from public duties previously on this week, he stated he would maintain his teaching commitments.
